Set in the lap of Indian royal palace, the Diggi Palace Hotel hosted Zee Jaipur Literature Festival 2017. Along with the intellectual sight-seeing, it was a visual treat for all the beauty lovers- the decoration was mesmerizing, and the event was a treasure chest for literature lovers. Having writers, journalists and entrepreneurs from all over the world and speaking out on topics and bringing the things to our attention was a very enlightening experience.
The whole festival captivated me with its charm and aura but these two of the activities really enriched me deep within the heart.
By David Armitage, introduced by Vedica Kant
Introduced with the civil wars that were first observed in 1BC in Roman Empire and then slowly coming forward in time to the 1700s since when civil wars were increasing. Coming to the present time he concluded it that, during the historic period civil wars were only resulting out mess and chaos, but during the present time period he mentioned them as way to reduce the oppression faced by a few minorities by giving Sri Lankan LTTE civil war and Colombian civil war as examples that were calm and more peaceful compared to the rest. He also pointed out that if the people are not careful and proactive, the current political leaders of the world may destroy the peace achieved and maintained after the Second World War.
Devdutt Pattanaik, introduced by Amrita Tripathi.
Presented by Bhaskar Bhasha Series.
Devdutt Pattanaik’s session was my personal favourite, the way similarities were shown between Indian mythology and Greek Mythology, the basic concept of both the mythologies. It was conveyed in an easy to understand way, where he told that Indian mythology says that no matter what happens we have to understand it and proceed and the Greek mythology is solution oriented. We have been reading about both but never noticed this difference between the two. He said Indian mythology goes by the principle Anadi Ananth (Our very own university’s principle). And he Greek mythology has got a starting point and ending point, both are having their own values. It was mentioned by him that the modern professional world runs on Greek mythology which continuously keeps assessing you for your performance in your job, just like Greek mythology and rewards us. He also showed that there is a possibility that Greek divine hero Heracles is maybe because of combination of har(hera)+ kul(cl)=ish(es). This was the session in which kids of age group 8-16 yrs old had participated more in number than adults, which says how involving it had been made by Pattanaik.
I would like to thank TALF Forum for giving me the chance to visit the Jaipur Literature Festival and I feel that this experience has enriched my knowledge and experience in knowing about the Asian perspective.
